Quick question:
How many unread marketing emails are sitting in your inbox, right now?
I’m betting it’s quite a lot (unless you’re committed to deleting them all)…
And if you keep your number in mind, you can see if you beat my “high score” in just a sec.
Now the night’s are fair drawing in (as we say here in Scotland)…
And I don’t know how things are where you’re at, but sunset for me today is at a ludicrously early 3:39pm.
Naturally, this means I’m enjoying a lot of cozy evenings in, and watching a fair bit of Netflix.
But the amount of slop on there these days is astounding. And it’s all thanks to fragmentation.
Over the past 5 years, content licensing has gotten way more competitive.
Many major studios pulled their shows and movies off of Netflix, making them exclusive to their own platforms like Disney plus, Paramount Plus, and HBO Max.
But Netflix still wants to create the perception of having content galore…
So they’ve filled their app with heaps of slop. (The cheaper and easier it is to make, the better.)
I’m talking about dull-as-dishwater game shows like “Is it cake?”…
… where contestants guess whether an object is real… or if it’s made of cake.
And the never-ending stream multi-part documentaries they churn out.
Hell, one of these so-called “documentaries” — The Psychopath Life Coach — was literally a glorified direct-response VSL to promote some dude’s steeply-priced life coaching services. lol
And the result of all this?
Streaming has devolved into having the same problem as cable TV.
i.e. You’ve got the illusion of choice with thousands of channels, but realistically, you only ever watch 2 or 3 of them.
But this problem ain’t unique to streaming.
Email inboxes — the world over — are awash with oodles of slop, too.
Most of which never gets read. And as I promised to reveal earlier… one of my inboxes is sitting at 80,045 unread emails right now, bahaha.
(Did you beat my high score?)
Anyways… it begs the question:
How can you make sure your emails stand out in the inbox like a diamond in a coal mine?
Easy answer:
Pack ‘em full of attitude.
That means ditching the overly-designed commercial looking emails — that look not too dissimilar to the big ol’ pile of junk mail that just clattered through my letterbox…
And writing plain text messages that entertain…
… showcasing your unique personality, and appealing to your reader’s self interest.
