Alright, hotshot… you’ve landed the gig. Congrats!

But don’t go poppin’ the champagne just yet. Because this next phase — the delivery phase — is of muchos importance.

You don’t want to fumble getting paid on time… or risk your client disappearing into the ether the moment the invoice hits… or turn in sloppy work that’s destined to ruin your reputation. Do you?

This section is your insurance policy against all that (and more.)

You’ll learn how to:

Lock in payment terms (and actually get paid) without awkwardness or delay
Onboard clients like a pro so you look sharp as a tack from day one
Deliver copy that slaps so hard it makes them ask to work with you again

Because getting paid once is nice. But getting paid again and again by clients who love your work… that’s where the real money is at.

Onward:Client Onboarding: The Gold-Digging Phase (But You’re Digging for Copy, Not Cash)

Before you write a single bloody word, you need to get your hands on the raw material. So it’s time to start digging.

I’m talking about the juicy stuff, such as:

What the offer actually is
Who it’s for
Why anyone should give a toss about it
And the real-world stories, numbers, pain points, and dreams that turn bland copy into “take-my-money” gold

Now, technically, you could send your client a tidy little questionnaire to fill out.

But let’s be real… Your client doesn’t want to be given “homework,” do they? Part of why they hired you was to make their life easier, not harder. So here’s what I recommend instead:

Get them on an onboarding call.

Even if they say, “just send me questions via email”… push for the call. Because when you’re on a Zoom with someone — asking questions, digging deeper, pressing for specifics — you’ll get ten times more useful intel than you ever will in a Google Doc.

The only time you should ever skip the call is if the client is a total recluse who simply refuses to talk over call or video.

In that case, send the questions via email…

But still do your own research first, so you’re not firing off “So… what does your company do?” like a clueless eejit.

This doc is your best friend… and all the info you need to write great copy can be found by completing that document.

So do your own research first and fill out as much of that document as you possibly can before getting on an onboarding call with your client.

And then get them on call and ask them any questions you need to fill in the gaps in your knowledge… as well as diving deeper into the nitty gritty details of what you already know.

Don’t just go through the motions.

Press for specifics. Dig deeper. Ask why, how, when, who else, what happened next?

Details are your ammo.

You want to uncover the little things that make the copy sparkle. So put on your detective hat and get to work. Because that’s how you find the best hooks.That’s where the gold is.

Get nosy. Get curious. Get borderline annoying.

The deeper you go with your research, the easier the writing will be… and the better your results will be, too.

That covers all you need to know about onboarding…

Now let’s move onto a subject that warms the cockles of every freelancer’s heart: Getting Paid.

Let’s make sure you actually see some cash for all this cleverness.

Getting Paid: Getting the C.R.E.A.M & Protecting Ya Neck (And Your Wallet)

Like the Wu Tang Clan once said: Cash rules everything around me…So let’s talk about the real reason you’re here, because I suspect it’s not just because you love writing words that sell.

It’s because you want to get paid and make money on your own terms.

So let’s cut the fluff and get into how money actually changes hands in the freelance copy game.

There are two ways you can charge:

Flat fee
Flat fee + commissions (a.k.a. royalties)

Or… I guess there’s three ways actually — because some copywriters work purely on commission — but that’s more advanced and you needn’t worry about that for now. I’ll hold off on writing about threeways for another, lewder book.

Now back to business:

When you’re starting out, forget commissions.

Yeah, the idea of getting paid every month for a piece you wrote six months ago sounds sexy…

But in the real world? It’s a mess.

Especially if you’re working with small-time clients who don’t even know how to track results, never mind cut you in on them.

So in the beginning, stick to flat fees. They’re simple, reliable, and get money in your pocket faster.

And when charging a flat fee…

Always Insist on Getting Paid (At Least) 50% Upfront

Here’s how that works in practice:

You get paid 50% upfront (before any work begins.) And you get your final 50% on completion.

Why?

Because life happens. Clients occasionally ghost. Or they get cold feet and completely change the project midway through. Or a whole litany of other B.S. can occur between the project beginning and ending…

And if you’ve already put in 20 hours writing their sales page and they vanish into the ether…

You’re not getting paid. And it’s not worth hiring a lawyer to chase a $1,000 invoice halfway across the country (or sometimes, the globe.)

But with a 50% deposit, you’re at least covered for some of your time and effort.

Another thing: People take you more seriously when money’s on the table.

They show up. They get back to you promptly with answers to your questions. They treat you like a pro.

So always insist on getting your 50% before doing even a lick of writing.

Now, there is one exception to this rule…

If you’re working through a jobsite like Upwork, they act as an escrow service. The client funds the project before you start, and the money is only released once the job’s done.

So on that platform, a 50% upfront fee isn’t necessary and might even scare some clients off.

But everywhere else, get your fifty!

What About Commissions?

Didn’t I just tell you to forget about commissions for now? … What’s that? You still want to learn about them anyway.Well, okay… If you insist. Here’s the dealio:

Commissions = a cut of the profits your copy generates.

Sounds good, right?

And it can be, but only if:

You’re working with a business that has systems in place to accurately track sales…
And they have systems in place to ensure they pay you fairly…
And… they actually intend to honor the deal.

In your first year, you’ll be lucky to be working with clients who can tick just one or two of those boxes… never mind all three. So don’t waste your time haggling over commissions with a guy selling eBooks out his mum’s basement. He’s not Agora.

Wait until you’re writing launch packages, full-blown sales letters, or VSLs for established brands with a history of paying royalties.

And even then — if you go this route — always ask for GROSS commissions (minus refunds and tax). Not net.

Net commissions mean the client gets to deduct everything from printer ink to the CEO’s dog walker, leaving you with pennies.

What’s a good gross commission rate to ask for?Well, I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but that’s a bit like asking how long is a piece of string? It depends.

For instance, if someone is selling a low-overhead, high-margin product like a digital course or an eBook… commissions of 3% to 5% are very good. And as high as 10% isn’t unheard of.But if they’re selling something physical with low-margins, you might be lucky to get 0.5%.

One alternative to percentage based commissions is per-unit deals…

E.g. You get 25 cents for every bottle of supplement sold.

That can work too. But again, only with legit businesses.

Or another alternative…

Let’s say you’ve taken over responsibility for 100% of a company's email marketing… from writing the copy, setting up triggers & automations, sending all the broadcast emails etc. … well in that case, you could negotiate a performance-based deal where you get paid a percentage of any extra revenue generated above their current historic baseline.

There’s many ways to cut creative deals that can reward you for writing high-performing copy… and structuring them in a win-win way so the client is happy to keep working with you… and you’re happy to keep collecting the money.

But as I’ve said many times already, this is advanced stuff.

Don’t worry about it until you're working in the big leagues. Until then, rock flat fees all the way, baby!

Moving on…

Here’s How to Get the Money in Your Bank Account

You’ve got a few solid options here… and one you’ll want to avoid like food poisoning.

Let’s start with that not-so great one shall we

PayPal (The Devil You Know)

Look, I used to use PayPal when I started out.

It was easy. I already had it, and I didn’t know any better.

But these days? I wouldn’t touch PayPal with a shitty stick unless the client insisted it was the only way they could pay me. And even then… I’d make them pay extra for the trouble.

Now why do I hate PayPal so much, you ponder?

For starters, their fees are borderline criminal. That alone is a good enough reason to avoid them.

But worse still, they have a habit of shutting down people’s accounts and withholding their money.

I know multiple good people — freelancers and biz owners — who had their accounts banned completely out of the blue. No warning. Nary an explanation. And to top it all off, PayPal wouldn’t let them access their funds for at least 6 months.

Not ideal when the mortgage payment is due…

So that is why I refuse to use PayPal and I suggest you do the same.

Now I don’t know anything about Cashapp, Venmo or all similar types of services (I’ve never used them) but they scream amateur hour if you’re using those.

Here’s some better alternatives:

The Trusty Bank Transfer

For domestic clients, a direct bank transfer is the cleanest, cheapest, most professional way to get paid.

Just send over your bank details (or better yet, a proper invoice with them included) and let the client wire you the funds. And boo-ya, you’ve got money in your account, usually within 24 hours… or sometimes instantly these days.

But what if your client is based in a different country from you?

Then You’d Be Wise to Use Wise

You’ve got two options here:

Option 1: Send them a Wise payment link.

If they’ve got a Wise account too, they can pay you directly. The fees are low and the money transfer is fast. Happy days!

Option 2: Set up an international account.

Wise lets you open bank account details in multiple currencies and countries — USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, whatever. So if your client’s in New York or Sydney, you quickly set up a free US or Australian bank account with Wise, send your client the details, and they’ll be able to send you money like that.

As for another option, there’s:

Stripe: Great for Card Payments

If you’ve got a website (or don’t mind a little setup), Stripe is a great way to let clients pay you by debit or credit card.

It takes a bit of upfront effort to get rolling, but once it’s set up, it’s smooth sailing.

You can just create a payment link for the amount your client needs to pay you, send them the link, and they can pay right away with a card.

Just remember: Stripe takes a small cut, but it’s still better than PayPal, and in my personal experience, your funds are far less likely to get held hostage for 6 months because you look “suspicious.”

Moving on…

Do You Need a Contract?

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Hell yes.

But not for the reason most people think.

See, if a client stiffs you on a $1,000 or $2,000 job, are you really gonna lawyer up and chase them through the courts? Nah. Not worth the time, stress, or cost. That’s why I told you earlier… always get 50% upfront.

That 50% is your protection. If things go sideways, at least you got something.

But a contract does a few other very important things:

It makes you look professional…
It makes the client take you more seriously…
It forces you and your client to get very clear on the scope of work before anyone puts pen to paper (or finger to keyboard).

Now, confession time:

I didn’t use contracts at all during my first year as a freelancer. And I got lucky, worked with (mostly) good people, and never got stiffed. But once I landed my first multi-5-figure gig with royalties… I knew it was time to tighten the ship.

So let me save you the same growing pains:

Start Using a Letter of Agreement from the Beginning.

(And yes — call it a Letter of Agreement. Not a “contract.” It’s a simple linguistic sleight-of-hand that keeps things friendly while still protecting your arse.)

But let’s get something straight:

I’m not a lawyer. I’m a copywriter.

So if you want something that’s ironclad, go pay a solicitor to draw one up. But honestly, unless you’re dealing with mega bucks, don’t sweat it too much.

‘Cause the real value of the Letter of Agreement is in setting clear expectations from the jump. That alone will prevent 99% of client drama.

So what do you put in it?

Here’s a sample letter you can copy, paste, and customize for any client you work with:

This letter confirms our agreement regarding our business relationship. Here’s what we’ve agreed upon:

To begin this arrangement, the [CLIENT NAME] agrees to pay [YOUR NAME] 50% of the total fee upfront. Payment will be made via [PAYMENT METHOD]. No work begins until this upfront payment is received.
Before the project starts, [CLIENT NAME] will provide [YOUR NAME] with all relevant materials for writing the copy. This includes prior research, product access, previous marketing, or any other relevant assets requested.
[YOUR NAME] agrees to deliver the first draft by [DEADLINE DATE], assuming all materials are received by [PROJECT START DATE]. At this point, [CLIENT NAME] may request revisions. Once revisions are complete, the remaining 50% is due via [PAYMENT METHOD].
[YOUR NAME] is working as an independent contractor and not as an employee or agent of [CLIENT NAME].

Get one of these signed before every project and you’ll never wonder where you stand.

Getting The Work Done

Now it’s time to earn your keep. So let’s talk about how to deliver damn good copy on time, every time, while being a pleasure to work with.

What’s the magic word you need to achieve all this?

Abracadabra, you say?

No… Don’t be so silly. The magic word is process.

Why You Need a Process (Even If You’re a Disorganized Bastard)

Most freelancers simply wing it.

They land a gig, fire up a blank doc, and just write shooting from the hip.

But you? You’re going to do it differently. You’re going to do it better. You’re going to have a simple, repeatable system that lets your client know — right from the off — that you’re a pro who has got their act together.

That’s what sets you apart.

Because here’s what happens when you don’t:

You have one version of how the project should run…
Your client has another version in their head…
And when those expectations crash into each other?

You’ve got chaos, delays, scope creep, passive-aggressive emails, and a whole heap of other not-so-nice things… and we don’t want that, do we?

So you set expectations early. As copywriting legend John Carlton so often puts it, you’ve got to be the “adult in the room.” A.K.A. the one steering the ship. That means acting like the project manager as well as the creative.

(And by the way, many clients are more disorganized than a drunk raccoon in a filing cabinet. So if you can be the calm, collected pro? They’ll love you for it.)

And that starts with a system. So…

Here’s My 5-Step System For Getting Any Copy Job Done

Now before you start complaining…

As it just so happens, yes, we have already covered much of this process already. So I AM going to repeat myself here for the purposes of laying it all out for you in a neat, organized order that’s easy for your brain to digest.

After all, it’s better to be redundant than remiss… and if you don’t like it, tough luck.

That said, I will keep this process relatively brief. Here it is:

Step 1: Do Your Own Research

Before you even think about messaging the client asking for logins, documents, or two-hour-long Loom calls, start with your own recon.

Type their niche into Google. Hit Amazon, Reddit, Quora, niche forums. Scroll the 1-star reviews of related products (and your clients products). Scroll the 5-star reviews while you’re at it, too.

You’re hunting for what the market is actually saying — in their own words — not the sanitized crap your client thinks their customers care about.

This is where you learn the market’s language. Their fears. Their fantasies. Their frustrations.

Don’t skip this step: Because if you get this wrong, your copy doesn’t stand a snowball's chance of working.

Step 2: Extract The Intel From The Client

Now that you’ve got your head halfway inside the customer’s brain… it’s time to squeeze the rest of the details out of the client.

This is where you get on the call we discussed in the onboarding section earlier and fill in all the blanks in your research doc and dig deeper into the specifics.

Don’t be shy. Your job is to drag what you need out of the client so you can do the job right. And if you’ve already explained your process on the prospect call (like you should have), they’ll expect you to ask for this stuff.

Step 3: Write The Damn Thing

This is where you shut the world out, put your phone on airplane mode, and hammer out your first draft like a lunatic.

You write fast. You don’t self-edit. You don’t re-read every sentence. Your only job is to get the whole thing down while it’s still hot. And yes, it’ll be ugly. That’s the point.

This is how real pros write copy… writing a dirty draft that they can polish later.

Step 4: Let Your Copy Breathe, Then Edit Like a Savage

This step is very important. So don’t go skipping it. It is imperative that once you’ve finished your dirty draft you then take a break.

Go for a walk. Watch your favorite TV show. Enjoy some afternoon delight with that special someone in your life. Whatever.

Then come back to your draft with cold eyes and a hot scalpel. And take your ego out of it by pretending you didn’t write this dirty piece of copy. Some other schmuck did and now you’re tasked with the job of ruthlessly editing it into something great.

Identify all the bits of copy that are confusing, too unbelievable, or just plain boring.

And cut all the fluff while you’re at it. You should be able to trim it down by 30-50% without losing any of the persuasive power.

By the time you're done, your copy should read like a fast, exciting sledge ride down a slippery slope.

Once you’ve achieved this… then read the copy aloud to yourself… or better yet… use a text-to-speech plug-in or something like NaturalReaders.com to have it read aloud for you.

This way, you’ll hear what’s clunky, awkward, or out of place faster than your eyes will ever see it on screen. This allows you to iron out the final kinks in the copy.

Finally…

Step 5: Submit Your Work and Get Paid Your Final 50%

Now it’s time to submit the copy to your client. Send it in a clean Google Doc or Word file. Whatever you and your client have agreed upon.

And if you want to be a true pro: Include some notes on how the copy should be presented (or designed) to achieve best results.

You wouldn’t believe how many clients — especially smaller time clients who you’ll work with when starting out — murder perfectly good copy by butchering the design of how it is presented.

Once the copy is submitted, wait for any comments or revision requests from your client and complete those revisions promptly. Once you’ve got a boatload of experience under your belt, you can fight a bit for running your copy exactly how you want it to be written… because after all, you are the pro who they’ve hired to write copy that converts.

But in your first couple of years as a copywriter, don’t push back too hard against client revisions unless they’re telling you to do something completely asinine that would completely destroy the effectiveness of your copy.

They are the one who is going to be running the copy at the end of the day, so let them have the final say.

Once all that’s done, and the clients happy, send over your invoice for your remaining fee and collect your final payment for a job well done.

Keep the Client in the Loop at Each Step of the Process (or Risk Losing Their Trust)

Now, it’s not enough to just follow these 5 steps alone. There’s one more thing you must do.

Communicate.

At every step.

Clients don’t like it when you go radio silent. It makes them nervous. Even if the deadline for the gig is a couple of weeks away, and you’ve got everything you require from the client to write great copy, it’s still important to check in and let the client know the job is progressing.

You don’t need to give them a blow-by-blow account of every paragraph you write, but a quick message every couple of days goes a long way.

That’s all it takes to reassure your client and keep them happy.

This will show them they’ve hired someone reliable. Someone who knows what they’re doing. Someone they can trust to deliver on time.

And in this game, trust is everything.

So follow the 5-step system and be communicative.

This 5-Step System Works Because it Forces You to Look & Act Like a True Pro

Most newbie freelancers? They usually have a 2-step system:

Write
Submit.

And that’s how you end up turning in weak, undercooked, first-draft slop that doesn’t convert and tanks your chances of getting rehired.

Don’t be like that.

By using this system — gathering intel, researching hard, editing with intent — you’ll deliver higher-quality copy than 95% of the freelancers out there.

And that brings us to the next sweet little topic:

How to get repeat business from happy clients.

Turning One Job Into Many

We already covered referrals earlier, so I won’t beat that drum again. Just remember: when you deliver a win, ask for a referral. Most happy clients will want to recommend you. Sometimes they just need a wee nudge.

Now, here’s where things get juicy…

There’s a saying in marketing:

“The easiest person to sell to is the one who just bought.”

It’s true. You ever see watch collectors? They buy a Rolex… and two weeks later, they’re looking at APs, Omegas, Panerais… and to any rational human being it doesn’t make a damn lick of sense. You can only wear one watch at a time after all.

But people who love watches aren’t rational people. At least not when it comes to watches. Their addicts! Addicts, I tell you!

And the same goes for many other things people buy, too…

Because buying builds momentum. It gets people in motion. And people in motion… stay in motion.

So once a client hires you once, and you deliver the goods, they’re far more likely to hire you again. That is… Assuming you’re good to work with, hit deadlines, don’t act like a diva, and your copy does what it’s bloody supposed to.

Which Brings Us to the Gold Mine: Retainers

Retainers are how you stop chasing projects like a stray dog looking for scraps and start collecting regular, predictable, delicious paydays.

Here’s how it works:

The client pays you a set fee each month… …and you deliver an agreed amount of copy in return.

Pretty simple, right.

But — and this is key — not every client is a retainer candidate.

If they only launch once a year? Or they barely email their list? (Big mistake) Or they’re “still working out their next offer”?

Forget it.

You want clients who already create regularly, who sell stuff consistently, who live in launch cycles or email their list 3–7 times a week (or more!)

These are your retainer-ready whales.

Get chummy with a client like that, deliver a win — and voilà — you’ve got leverage.

Now, how do you pitch the retainer?

It’s dead simple. You don’t need some fancy proposal or a 15-slide deck. Just have a conversation.

Ask: “Hey, how’s your email marketing going lately?” … or … “Are you launching anything new next month?”... or… “You doing anything with those old leads who didn’t buy?”

And if you’re lucky, which you often will be, they start selling themselves on working with you again. Because you’re making them think about all the things they should be doing… and all the reasons they need someone like you in their corner.

And if they ask for details? Just lay it out plain and simple:

“Here’s how this would work… You pay me [flat fee] per month. I deliver [X emails / Y ads / Z pages] each week. I handle everything. You stay focused on running your business.”

Position it like it’s doing them a favor. Because you are! You’re removing stress, saving time, and adding revenue.

And that, my friend, is how you turn one-off gigs into long-term income.

Stack two or three nice retainer gigs together and before long, you’ll have more reliable monthly income than most full-time employees.

How to Structure an Email Retainer Gig

Now let’s say you land a sweet retainer gig writing emails.

First off, congrats! Here’s what that retainer might look like in practice:

The client hops on a 30–60 minute call with you each week. That’s it. It’s super easy for them and not very time consuming… and this functions as your “strategy time.”

On the call, you:

Review what emails did well (and which ones flopped like a wet pancake)
Plan out the promo calendar… upcoming launches, offers, campaigns, etc.
Dig for stories, angles, new hooks… anything that’ll make great fodder for future emails.

They show up, you ask smart questions, record the call, take notes… then you disappear and do what you do best: Write damn good copy.

It’s a beautiful system and if you ever get a client willing to work like this, treat it like gold.

But let’s be real… Not every client needs a retainer. Some folks only need copy now and then and that’s fine.

Because here’s the kicker:

Even if they don’t want a retainer and they’re not ready for another job right now…

Even if they’ve got no referrals to give you (and yes… this is truly the LAST time I’ll say it: ASK for the damn referrals, will you?)…

There’s Yet Another Way to Squeeze More Juice from the Same Orange

Want to know what it is?

Use the results you get for this client to win your next one. Turn the project into a case study.

Now, I’m not saying you need to put on a lab coat and write a bloody white paper. All you need is:

What the project was
What you did
And what results it got

Stick that in a quick one-pager. Or post about it on LinkedIn. Or email your list and say: “Just finished up a killer landing page for a client where I doubled their opt-in rate in 5 days. Here’s what I changed…” or whatever result you achieved for them.

And that alone can help bring in more work from the work you’ve just done.

Meaning you get: a payday, a new portfolio piece, a case study, another notch on your belt, and if luck is on your side… another gig from someone you’ve impressed with your work.

One final thing you can do:

Get a Killer Testimonial (Even if Your Client Sucks at Writing)

This is another trick many freelancers completely overlook…

Get a testimonial.

Not just some limp little “He was great to work with” nonsense either. I mean a proper, sales-boosting, client-convincing testimonial that sells you when you're not in the room.

Now, I’ll be straight with you: Most clients suck at writing testimonials.

It’s not their fault. They’re not copywriters. They don’t know how to structure a persuasive sentence, let alone a compelling endorsement. That’s why they hired you!

So what do you do?

You make it easy for them.

After every job you complete, send them a short message that says something like:

“Hey [Client Name], I really enjoyed working with you on this project. I’d love to feature your feedback on my site or proposals. Would you mind answering a few quick questions to help me put together a testimonial?”

And then you send them these six questions:

What was the main concern you had when hiring a copywriter?
Why did you choose to work with me?
How did you or your business benefit as a result of working with me?
What specific thing about working with me did you enjoy most?
Would you recommend me to anyone looking to hire a copywriter? Why or why not?
Is there anything else you'd like to add?

These questions are deceptively powerful, because they extract all the golden nuggets you need:

A problem/objection (and how you overcame it)... Proof you delivered value… A reason to hire you again… And a little emotional juice to make you seem likable.

And once they send back their answers, you can lightly polish it into one clean, well-written testimonial. Then get them to approve it before you use it anywhere.

This one tiny asset can bring you dozens of future jobs if you actually use it. And the best part?
