Strange as it sounds…
One of the best ways to write better emails — the kind that actually sell — is to pop down to your local comedy club.
‘Cause let’s face it.
Most marketing emails are as much fun to read as filling out your taxes.
See, my in-laws were in town visiting, so we all went to the comedy the other night, and it got me thinking… There’s heaps of tricks and tips you can pick up from comedians to spice up your emails.
Things like…
Knowing how to read the room (or, in your case, your email list) so you can figure out exactly how to win them over…
Or learning how to seamlessly glide from one topic to the next…
And my favorite, how to sprinkle a wee bit of humor into any story you tell, or offer your sell, to keep people hooked and coming back for more.
Now, maybe you’re sitting there thinking…
“But I’m not funny. Not even a wee bit. I couldn’t tell a joke to save my life!”
I get it.
But here’s the thing…
Peppering in a little bit of humor into your copy doesn’t need to feel like pulling teeth.
The key is to start small.
Have a brainstorm about the everyday silliness your audience can relate to — those things that are just a bit too absurd when you stop and think about them.
The world’s overflowing with ridiculousness these days, so it’s not hard to find something related to your industry.
Some examples for ya:
That limited-time offer some guru is selling… that mysteriously re-opens every single week like clockwork…
Or broccoli-headed zoomers condensing down classic direct-response books into Twitter threads… who’ve never written a successful promo in their life…
And that entrepreneur on Instagram who swears the key to success is waking up at 4 am every day… yet looks suspiciously well-rested.
These “relatable absurdities” are just one of my many tricks for quickly adding a jolt of humor to any email.
And while I can’t promise these kinds of jokes will send your subscribers into uncontrollable laughing fits…
Nor will they land you a Netflix comedy special…
But they will elicit a chuckle from some of your readers as they nod their heads in agreement with you…
Plus, they’ll make your emails a helluva lot more fun to read.
And at the end of the day…
That means more folks are gonna be repeatedly reading your emails, developing a connection with you, and vibing with the “world” your building around your personal philosophy and your offers.
That’s money in the bank, baby!

P.S. I’ll leave you with a little twist on an old Bob Monkhouse joke.
People used to laugh at me when I said adding jokes to your sales emails was a good idea……
Well they’re not laughing now!
