Today I’m going to show you how to write better copy (and feel less stressed) by simply re-arranging your furniture a little bit.
Yes, seriously!
See, creative work, like writing, lights up the prefrontal cortex which functions best when cortisol (your stress hormone) is nice and low.
And one of the easiest ways to keep your stress low while you work is by engaging in a little bit of Feng Shui.
Now if you just rolled your eyes at that, I get it. I really do.
And I’ll admit, it sounds a bit woo woo.
But it’s actually incredibly practical and you don’t need to be a Feng Shui expert to reap the rewards.
I ain’t an expert in it either…
But here’s my rudimentary understanding of it that will quickly get you up to speed on the basics.
Imagine you have an assassin hunting you down…
And if he sees you before you see him…
YOU’RE TOAST!
Well, Feng Shui (at least the part that matters here) is basically about positioning yourself in your work environment so you’d be best placed to spot that assassin first.
In short, that means:
- Don’t sit with your back to a window or door.
- Position yourself so you’ve got a clear view of the whole room… especially the entrances/exits.
Why?
Because if your brain is on high alert, scanning for threats… like the aforementioned assassin, or more realistically, much more mild “threats” like a door opening behind you… you’re burning mental energy that could otherwise be used for creative thinking.
But when you position yourself so such “threats” can’t sneak up behind you…
It allows you to more easily relax…
You think better, ideas flow easier, and the words come faster.
Now will this be a major transformative gamechanger to your writing.
Probably not. But maybe.
Especially if you’re a particularly anxious individual who’s currently working in a dreadful Feng Shui environment.
But I’m certain that it will at least give you a minor edge in your creative work.
And all it takes is 5-minutes (or less) of moving some furniture around a bit… and it will make you sharper for years to come.
So really… it’s a no brainer.
