You ever heard the ‘fact’ that you should always wear a hat when it’s cold…
… ‘cause you lose 80% of your heat through your head?
Turns out, that 80% number is total nonsense.
In actuality, you only lose about 10% of your body heat through your head. And not so coincidentally, the head makes up about 10% of the surface area of an adult body.
Whodathunkit?
As for another zinger:
You lose 80% of your intelligence blindly accepting made up gibberish as facts.
Okay, I made that ‘fact’ up myself…
But in all seriousness, passively accepting things as stone cold truths without filtering them through a bit of good ol’ critical thinking is how a lot of myths get created and take on a life of their own.
Just like these following 3 email marketing myths I see preached as gospel.
Myth #1: You should never use double opt-ins
Double opt-in is when someone has to click an email link to confirm their address after signing up to your list.
Which is great for a number of reasons.
For one, I’ve seen cases where trolls sign other people up to email lists and enter rude first names on the sign up form.
So not only does the unsuspecting victim receive unwanted emails from you…
They also get insulted by you whenever you use first name personalization in your emails.
And while I do see the funny side…
It’s something best avoided.
More:
The only people you want on your email list are people who want to be on your email list.
And so long as you’ve got a juicy enough lead magnet and you clearly inform folks on your opt-in form that they’ll need to confirm their email address to receive said lead magnet…
… you’re not going to be missing out on any good subscribers.
In fact, some psychological schools of thought suggest that people value things more if they have to work a bit harder to get them.
So it certainly doesn’t hurt to make it infinitesimally harder to sign up to your list.
Myth #2: You need a huge list to make money
This is just flat out false.
I’ve personally seen small, engaged lists of less than a 1,000 people rake in a cool 5-figures per month.
Simultaneously, I’ve seen lists of 100,000+ subscribers that respond like you just wrote an email to a rock.
Reason being: List quality trumps list size…
And your relationship with your readers matters a helluva lot more than sheer subscriber numbers.
Myth #3: Great email copy is the #1 factor in generating sales with your list
Reality: Great email multiplies sales… But it doesn’t create them out of thin air.
If you’ve got a weak offer or the wrong audience, even the best-written email won’t save you.
Offer + List = Sales.
Offer + List + Great Email Copy = Muchos more sales
And if you’ve got a good offer and list, and you’re ready to multiply your sales by writing better email copy…
